How to Use Nature to Get Back to Your Roots

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” – Albert Einstein

Living in a modern, technology-driven society, your days tend to rush by and before you know it, an entire year has passed. Living at this pace and feeling stressed and busy all the time does take its toll on your mind, body and spirit. We also spend so much of our time indoors that we tend to lose touch with nature.

Nature has the ability to nourish and heal your mind and body, which is why it’s the perfect tool for slowing down, grounding yourself and getting back to your roots. It’s only when you start surrounding yourself with nature that you realise how far you’ve drifted away from it.

Nature is one of the best teachers. It offers inspiration, calm and beauty, something that you can’t replicate using technology.

If you’ve been feeling like you don’t know if you’re coming or going, you can use nature to ground yourself and feel more focused and calm.

Using Nature as  Grounding Tool

Here are a few suggestions for how nature can be used as a grounding tool.

  • Take a Stroll Outside

This might sound simple but it’s one of the best ways to quiet your mind and get in touch with your soul again. If you can, kick off your shoes so that you can feel the grass beneath your feet. As you walk, take in the sights and sounds around you, smell the grass and flowers and feel the wind against your skin. This is the perfect opportunity to give your busy mind a much-needed break and to remember what’s important - the little things.

  • Add Essential Oils to Your Self-Care Routine

If you can’t get outside, bring nature to you. Essential oils have been around for years and for good reason. Every essential oil serves a different purpose and you can create your own combinations depending on the benefits you want to receive. Add the oils to a diffuser or use them in your bath. You can even incorporate skin and beauty products that contain natural ingredients into your daily routine to add a touch of nature to your mornings and evenings.

  • Meditate Outside

If you always meditate indoors, why not take it outside to get a change of scenery? Meditating outside will allow you to connect with nature and breathe in fresh air and wonderful, natural smells. You can even engage in an open-eye meditation so that you can focus on a tree, bug or plant. Doing so will quiet your mind and open your soul to all the wisdom that nature has to offer.

  • Start a Garden

If you have space, start a garden all your own. Doing so will get you to spend more time outside and digging your hands into the soil as you build your own garden will help bring you back to your roots. Gardening is also proven to have a positive effect on your mood and emotions, which is an added benefit. Plus, there’s nothing quite like picking flowers and vegetables from your very own garden.

  • Use Natural Sounds to Soothe Your Senses

If you think about the sounds we hear on a daily basis, it’s mostly honking horns, ringing phones and noisy offices. Listening to these types of sounds produces a very different effect to sitting on the beach listening to the waves crash. Another way that you can get back to nature is to fill your home or even your bedroom with natural sounds. There are a number of great apps that mimic the sound of rain, the ocean or the forest, all of which will instantly soothe your nerves and ground you.

When we are grounded, we experience more inner peace and a better quality of life. Nature has so much to offer if we only take the time to slow down, observe and listen.
